"Per lungo tempo l'incenso è stato riservato alle chiese, ma ai nostri giorni, in occidente, bruciare incenso a casa propria è diventato quasi una moda: si desidera respirare effluvi profumati, immaginando che, anche se si è occupati in attività prosaiche, essi santificheranno l'atmosfera circostante. Tuttavia, è preferibile riservare l'incenso agli esercizi spirituali, rimanendo consapevoli di ciò che esso rappresenta da un punto di vista simbolico.

Bruciando, l'incenso sprigiona un profumo. Quella combustione è l'immagine del sacrificio. Ogni sacrificio è una combustione: una materia viene data al fuoco affinché le sue emanazioni odorose salgano fino alla Divinità.
Per noi questa combustione ha veramente senso solo se la trasponiamo su un altro piano, vale a dire se la materia che sacrifichiamo è la nostra materia, la nostra materia psichica. Chi si sforza di vincere le proprie debolezze, purifica la propria materia psichica a contatto con quel fuoco spirituale costituito dalla saggezza e dall'amore divini. Da quella materia purificata emanano i profumi più sottili."

"Incense has long been reserved to churches, but these days in the West, burning incense at home has almost become fashionable: people like to breathe the perfumed scents imagining that even if they are busy with prosaic activities, the air around them is sanctified. But it is best to know the symbolic meaning of incense and reserve it for spiritual practices.
Incense gives off a scent when it burns. The burning is symbolic of sacrifice. All sacrifice is combustion: matter given to fire so that its fragrant emanations rise up to the Divine. For us, the act of burning really only has meaning if we transpose it on another plane, that is to say, if the matter we sacrifice is our own matter – our psychic matter. Those who endeavour to overcome their weaknesses purify their psychic matter with the spiritual fire of divine wisdom and love. Once purified, this matter emanates the most subtle fragrances."

"L’encens a longtemps été réservé aux églises, mais de nos jours en Occident, faire brûler de l’encens chez soi est presque devenu une mode : on souhaite respirer des effluves parfumés en s’imaginant que même si on est occupé à des activités prosaïques, ils sanctifieront l’atmosphère tout autour. Mais il est préférable de réserver l’encens aux exercices spirituels, en étant conscient de ce qu’il représente du point de vue symbolique.
En brûlant, l’encens dégage un parfum. Cette combustion est l’image du sacrifice. Tout sacrifice est une combustion : une matière est livrée au feu afin que ses émanations odorantes montent jusqu’à la Divinité. Pour nous, cette combustion n’a vraiment de sens que si nous la transposons sur un autre plan, c’est-à-dire si la matière que nous sacrifions est notre propre matière, notre matière psychique. Celui qui s’efforce de vaincre ses faiblesses purifie sa matière psychique au contact de ce feu spirituel que sont la sagesse et l’amour divins. De cette matière purifiée émanent les parfums les plus subtils."

"Der Weihrauch war lange Zeit den Kirchen vorbehalten, aber in der heutigen Zeit ist es im Westen fast Mode geworden, auch zuhause Weihrauch zu verbrennen: Man möchte diesen Duft einatmen und stellt sich dabei vor, er werde die umgebende Atmosphäre reinigen, obwohl man selbst mit prosaischen Tätigkeiten beschäftigt ist. Es ist jedoch vorzuziehen, dass der Weihrauch geistigen Übungen vorbehalten bleibt und man sich dabei bewusst ist, was er, vom symbolischen Standpunkt aus betrachtet, bedeutet.
Indem er verbrennt, setzt der Weihrauch einen Duft frei. Diese Verbrennung ist das Bild des Opfers. Jedes Opfer ist Verbrennung: Eine Materie wird dem Feuer anheimgegeben, damit ihre duftenden Ausströmungen bis zum Göttlichen aufsteigen. Für uns macht diese Verbrennung nur dann wirklich Sinn, wenn wir sie auf eine andere Ebene übertragen, das heißt, wenn die geopferte Materie unsere eigene Materie, unsere psychische Materie, ist. Wer sich bemüht, seine Schwächen zu besiegen, der reinigt seine psychische Materie im Kontakt mit dem spirituellen Feuer der göttlichen Weisheit und der göttlichen Liebe. Dieser gereinigten Materie entströmen die feinsten Wohlgerüche."
