"Come il bambino vuole almeno uguagliare il suo papà o la sua mamma, così un discepolo prende il proprio Maestro come modello. Ma l'ideale da raggiungere non è suo padre né sua madre né il suo Maestro, bensì Dio stesso, che lo ha creato a propria immagine. Il Maestro è una porta, una tappa, un educatore per un certo tempo. Non sta scritto da nessuna parte che il discepolo sia obbligato a fermarsi a lui. Attraverso il suo Maestro, egli deve andare verso Dio; e se il suo Maestro è arrivato fino a Dio, il discepolo sarà con lui accanto a Dio.

«Anche chi crede in me compirà le opere che io compio, e anzi ne farà di più grandi» dice Gesù nei Vangeli. Gesù desidera che coloro che lo seguono facciano grandi cose, anche più grandi di quelle che lui ha fatto.
È possibile? Sì, e se Gesù ha pronunciato parole così impersonali e così disinteressate, significa che non lavorava per la propria gloria, ma per l'opera di Dio, per la realizzazione del Suo Regno sulla terra. "

"Just as children want to be at least the equal of their father or mother, so disciples take their Master as their role model. But the ideal they should be aiming for is not their father, their mother or their Master but God himself, who created them in his own image. The Master is a gateway, a staging point, a teacher for a while. Nowhere is it written that disciples must go no further than him. Through their Master, they must go to God. And if their Master has reached God, they will be with him close to God.
‘The one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these’, said Jesus in the gospels. Jesus wanted his followers to do great things, even greater than he had done. Is that possible? Yes, and if Jesus spoke in such an impersonal and selfless way, it is because he was not working for his own glory but was doing God’s work, to bring about his kingdom on earth."

"De même que l’enfant veut au moins égaler son père ou sa mère, un disciple prend son Maître pour modèle. Mais l’idéal à atteindre, ce n’est ni son père, ni sa mère, ni son Maître, mais Dieu Lui-même qui l’a créé à son image. Le Maître est une porte, une étape, un éducateur pour un certain temps. Jésus souhaitait que ceux qui le suivent fassent de grandes choses, plus grandes même qu’il n’en avait faites. Est-ce possible ? Oui, et si Jésus a prononcé des paroles d’une telle impersonnalité, d’un tel désintéressement, c’est qu’il ne travaillait pas pour sa propre gloire, mais pour l’œuvre de Dieu, pour la réalisation de son Royaume sur la terre."

"Genau wie das Kind wenigstens so weit kommen will wie sein Vater oder seine Mutter, nimmt ein geistiger Schüler seinen Meister als Beispiel. Aber das zu erreichende Ideal ist nicht sein Vater oder seine Mutter und auch nicht sein Meister, sondern Gott Selbst, der ihn nach Seinem Bilde geschaffen hat. Der Meister ist ein Tor, eine Etappe, ein Erzieher für eine gewisse Zeit. Es steht nirgends geschrieben, dass der Schüler bei ihm stehenbleiben muss. Durch seinen Meister muss er zu Gott gehen. Und wenn sein Meister zu Gott gelangt ist, dann wird er mit ihm bei Gott sein.
»Wer an mich glaubt, der wird die Werke auch tun, die ich tue, und wird größere als diese tun«, sagt Jesus in den Evangelien (Jh 14,12). Jesus wünschte, dass die, die ihm nachfolgen, große Dinge tun, sogar noch größere als er. Ist das möglich? Ja, und wenn Jesus diese sehr überpersönlichen und uneigennützigen Worte aussprach, so deshalb, weil er nicht für seinen eigenen Ruhm, sondern für das Werk Gottes, für die Verwirklichung Seines Reiches auf Erden arbeitete."

"Al igual que el hijo quiere al menos igualar a su padre o a su madre, un discípulo toma a su Maestro como modelo. Pero el ideal a alcanzar, no es ni su padre, ni su madre, ni su Maestro, sino Dios mismo que le ha creado a su imagen. El Maestro es una puerta, una etapa, un educador durante un cierto tiempo. No está escrito en ninguna parte que el discípulo esté obligado a pararse en él. A través de su Maestro, debe ir hacia Dios. Y si su Maestro ha llegado hasta Dios, estará con él cerca de Dios.
«Aquél que crea en mi hará también las obras que yo hago, e incluso las hará mayores», dice Jesús en los Evangelios. Jesús deseaba que aquellos que quieran seguirle, hagan grandes cosas, más grandes incluso que las que había hecho él. ¿Es posible? Si, y si Jesús ha pronunciado palabras de tal impersonalidad, es porque no trabajaba para su propia gloria, sino para la obra de Dios, para la realización de su Reino en la tierra."
