"Quando ci prefiggiamo un obiettivo, per raggiungerlo dobbiamo seguire tutto un itinerario e applicare certi metodi per poter avanzare in sicurezza e senza difficoltà. In realtà, però, l'obiettivo e il metodo sono una cosa sola. È così che va compresa la parola di Gesù: «Io sono la via, la verità e la vita».

«Io sono la via»: Gesù camminava sulla via ed era la via, si confondeva con essa. E chi segue Gesù e cammina sulla sua via, deve diventare a sua volta la via: pensa a Dio, si dirige verso Dio e deve cercare di diventare come Dio stesso, ovvero identificarsi con l'obiettivo del suo procedere.
L'obiettivo diventa così il metodo, e il metodo è costituito da tutti gli esercizi che ci permettono di avanzare per realizzare la fusione con Dio e poter dire un giorno come Gesù: «Mio Padre e io siamo uno»."

"When we give ourselves a goal, to reach this goal, we have to follow a certain path and apply certain methods so as to proceed safely and unhindered. But in reality, the goal and the method are one and the same. This is what we must understand when Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life’.
‘I am the way’: Jesus walked on the path and he was that path, he became the path. And those who follow Jesus, those who walk on this path, must themselves become the path too. They think about God, they advance toward God, and they themselves must become like God himself. That is, they must identify with the goal. In this way, the goal becomes the method. And the method comprises all the exercises which enable us to advance, so that one day we become one with God and are able to say, like Jesus, ‘My Father and I are one’."

"Lorsque nous nous fixons un but, nous avons, pour y parvenir, tout un itinéraire à suivre et des méthodes à appliquer afin d’avancer en sécurité et sans encombres. Mais en réalité, le but et la méthode sont une seule et même chose. C’est ainsi qu’il faut comprendre la parole de Jésus : « Je suis le chemin, la vérité et la vie ».
« Je suis le chemin » : Jésus marchait sur le chemin et il était le chemin, il se confondait avec le chemin. Et celui qui suit Jésus, qui marche sur le chemin, doit devenir lui aussi le chemin : il pense à Dieu, il se dirige vers Dieu, et il doit chercher à devenir comme Dieu Lui-même, c’est-à-dire s’identifier au but de sa démarche. Le but devient ainsi une méthode. Et la méthode, c’est tous les exercices qui nous permettent d’avancer afin de réaliser la fusion avec Dieu et de pouvoir dire aussi, un jour, comme Jésus : « Mon Père et moi nous sommes un. »"

"Wenn wir uns ein Ziel setzen, haben wir, um es zu erreichen, eine Reiseroute und Methoden, nach denen wir uns richten, damit wir sicher und ohne Hindernisse vorankommen. In Wirklichkeit sind das Ziel und die Methode aber ein und dasselbe. So ist das Wort Jesu: »Ich bin der Weg, die Wahrheit und das Leben« (Jh. 14,6) zu verstehen.
»Ich bin der Weg«: Jesus ging den Weg und er war der Weg, er identifizierte sich mit dem Weg. Wer Jesus folgt und den Weg geht, der muss selbst auch zum Weg werden: Er denkt an Gott, er richtet sich aus nach Gott, er muss danach streben, wie Gott selbst zu werden, das heißt, er muss sich völlig mit dem Ziel seines Weges identifizieren. So wird das Ziel eine Methode. Die Methode, das sind alle Übungen, die es uns ermöglichen voranzukommen, um die Verschmelzung mit Gott zu verwirklichen und auch eines Tages wie Jesus sagen zu können: »Ich und der Vater sind eins« (Jh 10,30)."
